Finding a cat dental care food for my cats was easier than I thought. For the most part, they aren’t too picky with their hard food, aka “crunchies” at our house. When my vet told me some of my cats may need dental cleanings, she also gave me a list of the cat dental foods they recommend along with some sample packets of Hills Prescription Diet t/d to try with my cats. I took it home and sprinkled the Hills nuggets on top of the crunchies in the food bowl.

I already mix a few kinds of kibble together, so when I found out some of my cats were starting to have plaque build up, I took that list of foods she gave me and went to the pet store. Most of the ones on the veterinarian recommended list weren’t at the store. However, they were eating the Hills dental cat food I dumped in the bowl.

How I Made My Cats Think Dental Food Was Cat Treats

In fact, it appeared they saw them as treats because they ate them all up. I watched them specifically eat the dental care food when I put the second sample bag in their food. I think because I threw them on top and because of the size of the food, my cats thought they were treats. And my cats like their Temptations and Party Mix treats.

As you can see from this picture, the pieces are good size compared to the rectangular Temptations on the left in the image. So going forward, I continue to sprinkle a couple of handfuls on top of the bowl each day. The cats eat these cat dental treats without a fuss.

Since the bag is so big, I put some in an empty Party Mix plastic tub. Originally I did this because it was easier than unsealing and resealing this huge cat food bag. It was for my convenience.

However, the cats hear the treats container and come running. As soon as they see the cat dental formula food hit the bowl, they all want some because I’ve accidentally conditioned them to think these are cat treats instead dental diet cat food. Plus I put them on top with the other actual cat treats, Party Mix and Temptations.

My laziness ended up making this dental food more desirable to my cats. And I guessing it must taste okay to them also. Otherwise, the treat container alone wouldn’t have worked as well as it did.
